September 10, 1920 – January 12, 2015

Peter Gerald Hupperten Jr., 94, passed away on Jan. 12, 2015, at Alaska Regional Hospital.

Pete was born in Spokane, Wash., on Sept. 10, 1920. He graduated from Gonzaga High School in Spokane and accepted a football scholarship at Washington State University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in June of 1943.

Pete was in the ROTC in college and, immediately upon graduation, was sworn into the U.S. Army. He was initially stationed in the South West Pacific. He spent the rest of WWII in China and remained in China during the Communist Chinese civil war, working with Chiang Kai-Shek’s security. He also assisted in the transition of the Nationalist Chinese government from mainland China to Taiwan. His final duty station was Fort Knox, Ky.

Pete became a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, beginning in early 1965. He was the Safety Engineer for USF&G Insurance from the early 1950s, traveling to Alaska beginning in 1956. He established PG Hupperten & Associates, a safety and risk management consulting firm, and became an insurance agent with Marsh McLennan and then opened Hupperten Insurance Agency. He founded Wide Body Production, a video production company which filmed many years of UAA and Aces hockey.

Pete never retired. He maintained his insurance brokerage until his death, servicing a few select clients.

Pete joined the Lions Club in 1967, and was a member of Spenard Lions and Anchorage Benton Bay Athletic Lions Club. He held several offices locally and internationally. Pete received several Lions awards, including a Melvin Jones Fellowship.

He was inducted into the UAA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. Pete enjoyed golfing, bowling and working with youth in all sports. Pete was a semi-pro baseball umpire. He traveled to Lions Clubs International conventions internationally.

He loved hot fudge sundaes and telling his World War II stories. He was known for his humor and practical jokes.
